PostSubject: Activation and Resolution   2013-01-18, 06:46

I did not know nor hope that this was necessary.

When a card activates, there are two different moments in time: Activation and Resolution. Cards that are activated move UP in chains, and then Resolution moves DOWN.

Player A activates Monster Reborn
Player B activates Maxx C in response

First Maxx C resolves, setting its condition of drawing for each Special Summon for the rest of this turn. Then, Monster Reborn resolves, summoning a monster and making Player B draw.

Cards printed from Generation Force or later have cards written in the following order:
This means that you can activate the effect if the condition is met, whatever is mentioned at ACTIVATION happens when you activate it, and RESOLUTION is the actual effect of the card, which happens during resolution.

Now, there are certain thing that only happen at one or the other timing.

Cost: This is a payment you make, listed under ACTIVATION. This includes tributing cards, sending or discarding to the graveyard, or paying LP. Anything that happens here does not count as happening by a card effect.( also cost is paid once a card is legally activated even if negated the cost will still be paid)

Targeting: Targeting for an effect means one thing and one thing only: You select cards at the time of ACTIVATION. For example, Mystical Space Typhoon selects what card it will affect at ACTIVATION, and not at resolution.

The difference between Targeting and not Targeting is VERY large: When a card targets, you know which cards will be affected when you are trying to respond to the effect. If a card effect does not target, when it is activated, you do not know what is being activated.

Let us look at the following two cards: (MST and Elemental HERO Stratos)

"Target 1 Spell or Trap card on the field; Destroy that target."

"When this card is Summoned: Destroy Spell or Trap cards on the field equal to the amount of other HERO monsters you control"

I will explain Problem-Solving Card Text more in a future article, but these texts mean that the first card targets and the second does not. What does this mean?

Lets just say Player B has a facedown Mirror Force and a facedown Call of the Haunted, and Player A plays Mystical Space Typhoon. He targets the facedown Call of the Haunted, and then the ACTIVATION of Mystical Space Typhoon ends, allowing Player B to respond with it and summon a Sangan from his graveyard.

Lets look at the same situation with Elemental HERO Stratos. Player B controls the same two cards, while Player A controls 1 HERO monster, and then Normal Summons Stratos. He activates the effect effect to destroy Spell or Trap cards, and THIS is where the ACTIVATION of Stratos ends. He does NOT target what he wants to destroy, and your opponent does NOT know what he will. He can at this point chain Call of the Haunted to summon Sangan, but because Stratos does not target, you pick what to destroy at RESOLUTION of the effect, and can pick the face-down Mirror Force.

Remember that NOTHING in the entire game of Yugioh can activate in the middle of effects resolving, and picking what to destroy with Stratos is part of its RESOLUTION.

The following cards are famous for not targeting, but seeming like they do:

Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
Neo-Spacian Grand Mole
Spellbook of Fate
Artorigus, King of the Noble Knights
Harpies' Hunting Ground
Madolche Queen Tiaramisu
